There’s been some concern around the future of UPCs, so let’s set the record straight:
✅ UPCs are not going away.
📅 By 2027 and beyond, trading partners may require either a traditional UPC (1D), a simple 2D barcode, or a full-featured 2D barcode — depending on their specific needs and system capabilities.
This transition is about expanding options, not replacing barcodes overnight. Some retailers may begin preferring 2D barcodes to enable more robust product information, better traceability, and streamlined inventory, but there is no mandate to abandon UPCs across the board.
If you’re curious about your readiness, GS1 offers a helpful Barcode Capabilities Test Kit to evaluate your systems.
The shift toward 2D barcodes is a gradual one, and you have time to plan accordingly.
